Post bariatric body contouring surgery helps to remove excess loose skin that hangs off the body after massive weight loss.

After Bariatric Surgery or after massive weight loss, the body has an excess of loose skin. This leads to deformity in the anterior, posterior and lateral aspects of the trunk, chest, upper back, breast, arms, thighs, and face.

Trunk deformity

The excess skin which hangs after massive weight loss leads to several cosmetic and lifestyle issues. It is not only a telltale sign of previous excess body weight but also offers a favorable environment for fungal infection below the hanging skin. Patient is not able to wear clothes of his choice due to excess skin.

Circumferential excess

The excess skin is not only in the anterior region but it extends to the lateral and posterior region as well. Any procedure which addresses the anterior deformity only leads to an unsatisfactory outcome.

Breast laxity

After massive weight loss, there is lax breast tissue resulting in ptosis or drooping of the breast. This can be addressed with surgical procedures like mastopexy alone or in combination with Augmentation of the breast.

Arm laxity

Lax arm skin leads to cosmetic issues and patients are not able to wear clothes of their choice. This can be addressed with removing the excess skin and placing the scar in a favorable part of the arm so that it is least visible.

Thigh skin laxity

Excess skin in the region of thighs leads to infections in the lax areas along with the cosmetic deformity. It can be addressed by a thigh lift procedure.

How much time will it take to return to my day-to-day activities?

The patient is allowed to move about in the evening on the day of Surgery after most of the procedures. Supplemental analgesics are given to provide relief from post operative pain. The first couple of days are more sore and the discomfort slowly settles. One can expect to go back to work after a couple of days in smaller procedures and is expected to take a break for a week for a body lift.

Am I the right candidate?

Post massive weight loss or post bariatric body contouring can be done when about 18 months after the bariatric Surgery procedure or when the weight loss has stabilized. It is offered to non-smokers and healthy individuals. Candidates who smoke should leave smoking at least 1 month prior to the procedure. The patient should have realistic expectations.

Consultation

You should discuss what do you expect from Surgery, previous medical conditions and herbal nutritional supplement intake.

Will the procedure be done under local or general anesthesia?

Most post bariatric body contouring procedures are done under General Anesthesia. Individual small procedures of Brachioplasty can be done under local Anesthesia.

How many days of hospital stay should I expect.

Brachioplasty, Mastopexy, or small facial procedures of fat grafting can be done on a day care basis if done singly. When multiple procedures are combined or in the case of lower body lift, the patient is required to stay in the hospital for a couple of days.

What precautions do I have to take after lower body lift.

One has to wear an abdominal binder after the Surgery. It helps in recovery. Patients are encouraged to ambulate and eat a protein-rich diet. Exertional activities are avoided in the early days after Surgery.
